-- from jahloveforbinI have wanted to photograph indigenous people in Guatemala since I got here, but
it is a general no-no to photograph Mayan people. On this day, I went up to the
Laguna with some friends and they gave me free reign with the camera! More Mayan photos. Technorati Tags: Mayan, Guatemala

Old Mayan site at Todos Santos
-- from burtonwlThe Todos Santeros call this "the ruins", but it's still used for Mayan
religious ceremonies. A toothless man stopped to tell us about them. More Mayan photos. Technorati Tags: Todos Santos, Guatemala

Mayan Woman with Child in Antigua, Guatemala
-- from TimoluegeI had been standing nex to this (grand?)mother and the baby for quite some time, watching a religious procession go by. We had some eye-contact and I made a few funny faces at the child before I got the guts to ask her whether I could take her photo. A lot of Mayans don't want their photo to be taken (people have gotten stoned for taking photos of kids without permission in Guatemala) but she indicated it'd be ok. And no, she didn't ask for money afterwards either. What I like about this photo is how she totally ignored the camera. To me it seems like she is looking straight through me, not at me. On another subject: Something that I found very annoying was that once i had asked her permission to take aphoto of her and her child everybody else assumed they could just take photos without asking. -- from view-askewLago Atitlan, Guatemala, July 2004. Scan of photo taken with a disposable camera.Huipil [Wee-peel] is a Spanish term for a Maya woman's traditional blouse. It is the most personal, communicative and significant part of her traje or costume, and the grandest form of the culture's weaving heritage. It is used to identify the specific village of the wearer, her social and marital status, religious background and beliefs, wealth, authority and individual personality. More Mayan photos.
